Article by bell hooks

Prior to the Writing for Reconciliation Conference, the Shambala Sun contacted the conference planners, saying, "It is an auspicious coincidence that bell hooks graces the cover of the July 2006 issue of Shambhala Sun magazine, with a feature interview and an article by bell entitled Toward a Worldwide Culture of Love." They had hoped to provide copies of the article to conference participants, but the logistics of getting the article to Berea in time prohibited that. However, we are able to give you this article electronically.
As with many of our plenary speaker's writings, Toward a Worldwide Culture of Love is autobiographical to some extent. It traces thirty years of meditations on love, power, and Buddhism, and concludes it is only love that transforms our personal relationships and heals the wounds of oppression.
"The practice of love," says bell hooks, "is the most powerful antidote to the politics of domination."

Dear bell hooks,
I love the way, “Love Fights the Power” ended with a beginning...
“It’s where we start” (p.97).
…because life is cyclical and seasonal. We can end where we begin and begin again when we end.
One of the many provocative statements was: “Despite her appreciation for “her Yalies,” and the African-American studies department’s desire to retain her, she felt isolated in the ivory tower amid the New Haven ghetto, and she published no books while living there.(p.96)”
In an imagination as fertile as mine this comment produced many questions : What was it about Yale that stifled your prolific talents? Did you decide to focus exclusively on developing your pedagogy? Was it a head choice or a heart choice? I have more questions…but I will pause here.
The entire article reminded me of a powerful statement in “Bone Black” because it is a vision that that you and I share:
“And I still cling to the dream of a radical visionary artistic community that can sustain and nurture creativity” (p. 10).
One more question…have you found that place in Berea?
Thank you for the bright yellow sun of your hope that keeps my reds in line.
peace, love, joy….
maria
P.S.
SHAMBHALA SUN JULY 2006
“No doubt divine providence was at work in the universe when dr. bell hooks* and a little-known middle school teacher, named maria inez winfield* found themselves walking the same path, engaged in a practice of love.”
(p.60)* the names have been changed to protect artistic license.:o)
correction:
it was not "Bone Black" that contained the quote...it was, "Black Looks"
has anyone read this? any thoughts?
what did you react to in the article?
...oh my---i read so much bell hooks, i must apologize for citing the wrong source, again!
here is the correct reference:
hooks,b. (1994). Outlaw culture: Resisting representations.New York:Routledge.
and you can, in fact, find it at the bottom of page 10.
I too have been reading a lot of hooks and can't keep from merging my thinking about one with my thinking about another.
I have posted my thoughts and questions about this article on my personal blog Letters-and-Surveys.blogspot.com
Maria, I noted a quote in the article that matches your first thought here. "If we look for an end we will despair and not sustain our efforts. But if we see it as a continual process of awakening, we can go forward."
Our hopes for progress for justice through beauty and truth can be discouraging. This thought sheds helpful light on that subject.

Betsy,
your comments remind me of an article that I recently read by Derrick Alridge, a University of Georgia scholar. He discusses the African concept of "Sankofa". It means to return to the past to go forward.
I read your blog and published a comment!
Sankofa. I'll have to google that!
In my google search I found this. It is quite interesting and a helpful concept.

Betsy
I went there too!
Thank you!
The concept of SANKOFA is derived from King Adinkera of the Akan people of West Afrika. SANKOFA is expressed in the Akan language as "se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenki."
Literally translated it means "it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot".
"Sankofa" teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. Whatever we have lost, forgotten, forgone or been stripped of, can be reclaimed, revived, preserved and perpetuated.
Visually and symbolically "Sankofa" is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth.
